“Netra”, an eye-checkup and Cataract Camp by Archana Trust Suburban
January 24, 2010 Sunday : the date set for “Netra”, an eye-checkup and Cataract Camp by Archana Trust Suburban. The venue chosen was a Municipal School on Akurli Road, Kandivli East, Mumbai, as the eastern suburbs, even though populated by large sections of lesser income groups, are not as fortunate in getting enough charitable medical help, as the western suburbs.
The Trustee for Medical Camps, Ms Prabha Makharia, took ill a week before the Camp, but “Netra” already well publicised, was held on schedule, with volunteers arriving from unexpected quarters, making it a complete success !
The one-day Camp saw a registration of 477 persons of all ages. Registration was closed at 2 pm, very reluctantly, as many women could come only after noon, after filling up their buckets at home.
A team of 9 optometrists and doctors from Lotus Eye Hospital, Juhu tirelessly and efficiently examined the people, who were of all ages.
236 spectacles (both distance and reading) were distributed free of cost. People requiring different powers were asked to collect their glasses a week hence.
45 cases of cataract were discovered. Till now, 11 cases have been operated. Some who were in initial stages deferred the operation. Some were “sent” to the village, as working family members could not take care of them. Still others could not afford to lose their daily wages, if operated. Two of the cataract cases had AIDS, one was successfully operated upon. There was a case of holes in the retina, referred to the hospital.
Many minor eye ailments were diagnosed and medicines prescribed.
Mrs. Sharda Bubna, Senior Wing member of Archana Trust Suburban, was the main sponsorer. Her volunteers Theresa and Kamal were helpful throughout.
Mrs Lata More, Trustee, and Pallavi More provided great moral support and their staff ensured a smooth Camp.
Medicines and biscuits were sponsored by Ms Lata More and Ms Hema Deora.
Attending members: Alka Adukia, Shashi Beswal, Kavita Raniwala and daughters Samiksha & Nivriti, Sunita Goyal, Seema Ganeriwal, Shalini Goenka, Mala Tibrewala, Sumitra Modi. Suman Chowdhury donated Rs 11,000.
